Attracting and keeping the best and the brightest talent for any given organization is at the forefront of most business leaders’ minds. For some, it can seem daunting, but it is crucial for a company’s growth and overall success.

Watch our Thought Leadership video below for insights on hiring the Best & the Brightest.

There has never been a time when finding and retaining great talent has been in more demand. You can’t turn on the morning or evening news without hearing about the job market and the mention of the Great Resignation. Companies around the globe have lost employees to higher-paying, culturally more attractive positions and struggled with bringing on new team members that complement their current needs and team.

Adopting innovative strategies for hiring and retention is essential for all businesses, regardless of industry or size. The first step involves some introspection. We no longer live in a society that provides a pass to companies that are not providing a positive employee experience. Some areas to look at within your organization are leadership, current team, current open positions, diversity, company culture, and employer brand.

Outstanding leadership is vital for any organization. Organizations must look at all levels of management and determine if they have the right people for the job in all supervisory and management roles. There isn’t anything more that will drive employees away than a lousy supervisor or manager. An individual may be great at their position but lack the ability to coach and guide a team of individuals effectively. Understanding what makes a good manager is important. An article by Vartika Kashyap outlines a good manager’s do’s and don’ts. Providing coaching and training in this area can help take your organization from good to great.

It is crucial to look at your current team, their skill sets, personalities, and how they affect the employee experience for others. Many individuals want to work with people they respect, learn from, and like. Being strategic about hiring individuals that will positively affect the team and add to a positive employee experience for all is smart business.

Really looking at the roles that you are currently hiring and the ones that you know you will need in the future is important. Our CEO, Molley Ricketts, asks a question in our Thought Leadership series on How to Attract Top Talent,  “When was the last time that you read the job description that you are posting for the job you are hiring for?” Often when we are hiring someone for a position that has existed at the company in the past, we forget to review and update the job description even though that position has evolved. Without taking the time to review the role, how it has changed, and the necessary skills needed to be successful at the job, you are starting on the wrong foot from the get-go. Finding the right person for the role is already off the table.

Take a look at your current team. At the bare minimum, companies must have a concerted effort to be diverse. Does your management team represent your workforce? Have you made diversity within your organization a priority?

Today’s workforce takes company culture and an employer’s brand very seriously. For many individuals finding an employer that mirrors the same values, purpose and outreach are priority one. Compensation comes in many fashions, and it is not all about money. For some, it is paid time off; for others, it is a diversified benefit plan that suits their lifestyle. Did you know that on average most companies are made up of four to five generations? The wants and needs of the different generations must be taken into consideration.

What do you offer a candidate or employee? When was the last time you googled your company to find out what others say about your organization? Introspection is key to understanding hiring and retention for your organization. Finding your selling points and capitalizing on them will go a long way in attracting the best and brightest to your organization. In our Thought Leadership series on Attracting Top Talent, Ricketts reminds us of the importance of communicating what makes you stand out from the other organizations vying for candidates with the same skill sets.
